A Dose of Reality

Today, I really got a dose of reality. I've been dealing with some personal things lately and have been complaining that my life sucks. Then, I read about a blogger who is battling for her life.

In her blog she describes what her days are like. I stopped and immediately was ashamed and embarrassed. How could I even dare complain, when I've just read about the horrible day she had? My life is not as bad as I think it is. In fact, I have an amazing life and am blessed beyond what I could imagine.

This realization has done more than bring tears to my eyes, it has opened them. I will no longer feel sorry for myself. I will work on appreciating every moment, good or bad. I didn't write this to bum you out, but rather share this experience with you.

I hope you take a moment to look around and be thankful for the blessings you have, whether they're big or small. It all counts.

Are you looking for the perfect color collection for spring?

I think I've found it for you. Estee Lauder's Topaz Collection for Spring 2012 is beautiful!

Available for only a limited time, the golden and yellow hues, with the touch of turquoise make me wish I was on some beach somewhere. It was inspired by the sun-warmed desert, which I can totally see.

I had the chance to try a few of the products and I know I will use them a lot this spring...and probably into the summer. My favorite product in the collection has to be the Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Teal. It's what's been missing from my life. Seriously.

I wasn't sure about the Pure Color Gloss in Citron Kiss, didn't know if I'd like it. But, it's like a clear gloss with sparkle. I can see myself wearing it over certain lip colors to add some some shine. You know it's all about shine!

It's going to be a "beauty-ful" spring with this collection...I can already tell.

Los Angeles Love: LACMA Contested Visions in Latin America Through Film

Contested Visions in Latina America Through Film is a two-day film program held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). It is organized in conjunction with the Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World exhibition.

On January 21, a selection of feature films will be followed by a roundtable discussion, with some of the actors and directors. This will be held after the last film of the day. Then on January 22, there will be a series of compelling short films and documentaries that will be screened.

It will be hosted by Edward James Olmos, actor, producer, director and community activist, and curated by Marlene Dermer, co-director of the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF.

Tickets are free, but required; guests may call (323) 857-6010 or reserve tickets with LACMA online.

Sh*t Videos Say-YouTube's Latest Trend

Are you a YouTube junkie? If so, then you probably know that the latest video trend are those "Sh*t (fill in the blank) Say" videos. It all started on December 12, 2011 when the first Sh*t Girls Say video was uploaded. There is now a part 2 and 3. Along the way a few others started popping up.

Today, I started searching on YouTube and there are soooooooo many more. Like a lot! Some of them are pretty funny, some are not very funny, and some are dumb. And it doesn't stop at just "girls" it's a free for all! I think almost every race, gender, sex, and sexual preference is covered.

I don't know about you, but it really makes me wonder how many of these I've said. If I've ever offended you. I'm sorry. LOL! I've compiled some below. Starting with the original Sh*t Girls Say Episode 1, written and created by Kyle Humphrey and Graydon Sheppard , featuring actress/musician Juliette Lewis. Then there's the Sh*t Spanish Girls Say. It's hilarious...Wepa!

Cat Owners Can Breathe Now!

Amigas...when I started blogging, it was so I can share with you. Never did I think that would include telling you about a cat litter! LOL! But, this is sharing and hopefully it will help those of you who own cats.

If you're a cat owner, you know how hard it is to find a cat litter that actually does its job. It's all about clumping and odor control. And if you live in an apartment like me, then you have to worry about that litter box smell. Even if you do clean it all the time, there's still that "scent." Cleaning the box is another issue, especially when the litter doesn't clump like it claims it will. That makes scooping a mess.

Low Self-Esteem: A Latina’s Worst Enemy

Her entire life she was told she didn’t matter or that she was nothing. She’s never felt important, like she belonged, and wonders if she’ll ever accomplish anything. “She” is a product of never being praised, often criticized, or teased. Low self-esteem has settled in and made it’s home in her mind and heart.

"She" could be you, me, or someone you love.

You'll often see me write about how I was raised. And how I believe it shaped me to be the woman I am today. In no way was my childhood perfect. I heard and saw things I shouldn’t have. But, I was lucky to have a strong Latina to look up to and tell me that I could be anything I wanted to. My mom encouraged me to study hard, get involved in school, and go to college. She was my lifesaver.

Yet, even though I have all the support in the world today and constant praise, I sometimes feel like I'm not good enough or worthy of someone's time. Then one of my close friends or loved ones tells me I'm crazy. That's when I realize it's that low self-esteem trying to rear it's ugly head.

Low self-esteem is a Latina's worst enemy. It holds us down from all the greatness that we can accomplish. There are so many opportunities and options out there, but if we don't believe in ourselves, how can someone else believe in us?

When you're feeling like you're not "worth it," you're killing any chance of succeeding at what you really want in life. I know for a fact, that there are many opportunities that I've passed up because I didn't think I deserved it. I feel like kicking myself in the butt now!

Yes, low self-esteem is common, but it's also beatable with the right people encouraging you to be the amazing Latina you are. That "greatness" I wrote about can be all yours! Do me a favor, when someone you know and love is doubting themselves, give them a boost of confidence. Support them and you'll be amazed at what they can do.

I already know you're awesome, now it's time to show the world that you are and what you can accomplish!

New Year's Eve Traditions & Resolutions

New Year's Eve is only a few days away. Do you know where you'll be spending it? It seems like a lot of my friends are going to stay home and make it a quiet one. Me? I still don't know, but I do have a few ideas in the works. I do know I want to spend it with those I love. That's a must! Oh...and I have to get my NYE kiss from the hubby!

And I've always believed in how you celebrate New Year's Eve will dictate what the new year will be like for you. For example, last year we traveled up to San Francisco, so I rang in the new year as a traveler. And all I did in 2011 was travel. Am I stretching that one too thin? LOL!

Well, regardless what saying you believe in, I know we all have NYE traditions. When we were kids, we would run around banging pots and pans at midnight. It was so fun! Hmmm...that doesn't sound too bad this year. Maybe it will help get everyone's frustrations from 2011 out?

What are your traditions?

As for resolutions, there's only one thing in my life I wish to change, and that's to work on erasing the negative from life. This past year, I dealt with certain people and experiences that don't deserve to be posted here. "Out with the old and in with the new." In 2012, it's all about the positive. No jealousy, fake people, or hate allowed in the new year. It's all about realistic resolutions. Who's with me?

My "Day After Christmas" Plans

It's the day after Christmas and I'm sitting wondering if I should crawl back into bed. I'm so exhausted, but it's a good kind of exhausted. It was a weekend filled with family and food. Can you say tamale overload? Mmmmm...my grandma makes "the best" tamales ever! I actually had a few for breakfast.

Now, it's time to spend a day recuperating. That means lounging all day-which I am currently doing by the way.

Here is a list of things I will NOT do:

Cosmopolitan Latina Coming Soon!

Cosmopolitan magazine is all about the "Fun Fearless Female." Now, add "Latina" to that! Everyone's favorite beauty, fashion, and lifestyle magazine will soon add Cosmopolitan Latina to the magazine market.

Now, don't get too excited. At first, there will only be two issues-one published in the spring and the other in the fall. According to a recent New York Times article, they will be made available in California, Texas, Florida, and New York. They also plan on adding a "Latina" tab to their web site that will add beauty and fashion content and posts written by Latina bloggers.

I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to reading that first issue!!

New in 2012! COVERGIRL'S LashBlast 24HR & BlastFlipstick

COVERGIRL has some new products for you in 2012! And before they even hit the shelves, I had a chance to try out the new LashBlast 24HR mascara and the BlastFlipStick. I was excited to use them, because they are on Sofia Vergara's "Holiday Hotlist."

The LashBlast 24HR mascara claims to give you the "LashBlast drama you love, but with longer wear."

I put the mascara to the test and found out that it does give it that blast all the other LashBlast mascaras do. But, I did notice I needed a lot of coats to give it the drama I like. A few coats did lengthen and curl my lashes a bit. There wasn't much clumping or any flaking and it's smudge-resistant, which is always nice. I purposely didn't take my mascara off before I went to bed. I wanted to see how long it would last.

When I woke up, my lashes looked pretty much the same. Not like a fresh application, but it didn't look like any mascara came off while I slept. This is great for those who don't have time to reapply throughout the day or night.

Next, I tried the BlastFlipStick. It's a double ended lip color stick. It's the perfect duo that allows you to blend lipsticks to make the one perfect shade.

I was given the "smooch" shade. One side is a shimmer and the other is a cream shade. I'll be honest, at first I wasn't sure if I was going to like this. But, it's actually pretty cool. lce Age: A Mammoth Christmas Special is a Perfect Stocking Stuffer

America’s favorite arctic herd is busy decorating for the holiday season. In his rush to help, Sid destroys Manny’s favorite decorations. Manny is so upset he convinces Sid he is now on Santa’s naughty list. Sid, Crash, Eddie and Peaches take off for the North Pole to plead their case to Santa. Meanwhile, Manny, Ellie and Diego, worry over Peaches’ safety and race to find her. My dad & I at his party.

This past weekend we celebrated my dad's 60th birthday. His girlfriend planned a surprise party, although I found out later that he knew about it. As he walked in, he had the biggest smile on his face. He made his rounds and hugged every single person in the place.

I remember thinking... "Wow! These people really love him." Now, let me tell you, If you ever go to one of my dad's hangouts or meet someone on the street who knows him, you'll never hear a bad word about him. I promise.

It's funny because, growing up, we didn't have the perfect father-daughter relationship. My dad was stubborn, impatient, and he was always working. We weren't very close. Regardless, there was always food on the table and a roof over our head.

Today, my dad and I are the closest we've ever been. He's such an amazing man, but still stubborn and impatient-a gene he passed on to me. My lucky hubby! LOL!

I sat there watching him dance or just mingling with other people, I couldn't help but be reminded at how lucky I am to have him in my life. I'm one lucky daughter. Thank you poppa for all you do! I love you always and forever.

Fresh & Easy Holiday Party 2011

I never thought a holiday party could be so delicioso! Thanks to Fresh & Easy for the invite to their 2011 Holiday celebration at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.

We drank wine and ate the most delicious hors d' oeuvres served by Chef Cyndi Perez. We tried their Brie and Cranberry Pastry Puffs, Cranberry Sausage skewers and Mini Beef Croutes, all which you can find in the Fresh & Easy Holiday Guide. And no...I'm not bitter that I didn't get to try the Pumpkin Cheescake. LOL!

I did get to hang out with Liz from Thoughts of a Mommy and Rachel of The Art Muse. I love those ladies! And we walked out with an amazing bag filled with yummy food from Fresh & Easy. Latina Bloggers Connect & Sprint Wine Retreat

This past weekend was a busy one, but it couldn't have been better. I was invited by Latina Bloggers Connect and Sprint to a wine retreat in Santa Ynez Valley (north of Santa Barbara) on Saturday. This was my first time ever experiencing a wine tasting and it was so amazing. I learned a lot about wine and I was able to spend time with some of my fellow/favorite Latina bloggers based in Los Angeles. I can't stress how amazing our bloguera bond is. Every single person in our party got along.

The 2 hour drive flew by on the way up there. When we finally arrived to the Fess Parker Winery, we were in awe of how beautiful it was up there. We immediately got our VIP Wine Tour and Tasting started. Our guide Jack was very knowledgeable and extremely nice. We tasted four of their wines and before we knew it, it was lunch time.

Lunch was courtesy of Ericka of Nibbles and Feasts and Nicole from Presley's Pantry. These girls are so amazing. They are two of my fave food blogueras. Everything was delicious! We sat out on the grounds of the winery and ate and laughed...and ate and laughed some more. Then we made our way to The Tasting Room at Saarloos and Sons in the small town of Los Olivos.

As we arrived to The Tasting Room, I immediately knew were going to have an amazing time. Keith, who is from the Southern California area, is so passionate about wine making. Oh...FYI...if you plan on visiting and you're a snob, you'll immediately be asked to leave. This is not a place for snobs. I mean, the minute you walk in your listening to rock music. It was awesome. Enjoy Cupcakes is also on hand inside The Tasting Room. They pair cupcakes with the wines. I swear I didn't think they would be good together, but OH-M-Gee it was delicious. Each cupcake brought out the flavor of each wine we tasted.

After our tasting, it was time to take a stroll around the tiny town of Los Olivos. It's lined with tasting rooms of the surrounding vineyards, each with it's own vibe. If you're a wine lover, I would definitely recommend visiting. After our free time...it was time to head home.

In 2011, the phrase "safe sex" should be on every single and sexually active young ladies mind. It's not a joke and it's time to start taking care of yourselves chicas. When I was single and dating, things were so different. Men were often thought to be the ones responsible for practicing safe sex. How dare a woman carry condoms! Not today. Thanks goodness times have changed.

Not only do we have to be awesome in every day life, but we also have to think about things like what birth control methods is right for you and the different forms of contraception. I don't know about you, but growing up my mom didn't explain sex to me, I actually had sex education in the 6th grade and boy was I mistaken about a lot of things. Don't ask. LOL.

Today, we don't have to rely on what mom tells us or what we learned way back then in the 6th grade. We have great resources out there like the Bedsider.org web site.

Bedsider.org is an online birth control support network for women 18-29 operated by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy...Right now, seven in 10 pregnancies among unmarried women 18-29 are described by women themselves as unplanned. That sounds like a lot to us. We hope that Bedsider will be a useful tool for women to learn about their birth control options, better manage their birth control, and in the process avoid getting pregnant until they’re ready.

I'm going to be honest with you, if you're the single and sexually active young lady I spoke about earlier, then you REALLY to check out this site. It's so cool. I'm kinda sad they didn't have anything like this around before I got married.

You can check out the different birth control methods and where you can get it. You can set up appointment and birth control pill reminders via text or email. And the "Features" section is pretty cool, you get useful information and real life stories you can relate to. Bedsider.org was definitely made for you in mind.

FOOD: Spicing Up the Holidays with Honey-Infused Ponche

Honey & Grapefruit Ponche

Are you in the holiday mood yet? I think I have some hot "beverages" that just might get you into the holiday spirit!

Ponche, a traditional hot punch, is often served during the holiday's at Las Posadas celebrations, Christmas, New Year's Eve, or a cold winter night.

This holiday season expert mixologist Deysi Alvarez of Los Angeles, works with the National Honey Board (NHB) to reinvent this traditional Latin American drink. She introduces us to the distinctive flavor of the natural sweetener she grew up with: honey!

"The created honey-infused holiday ponches that explore the unique, aromatic qualities of honey and pair it with traditional ponche ingredients, like apples and cinnamon, to develop what are sure to become the hit of the season and the new holiday staples.

The incomparable taste of honey in the holiday ponches will bring life to your party and balance out your favorite holiday dishes. Whatever you plan on cooking, whether it be tamales or turkey, these honey-infused holiday ponches will make the perfect match."

**Editor's Note: These recipes are adult 21 years-old and over beverages because they contain rum, but could be made without the alcohol of course.

Enjoy!!

HONEY AND GRAPEFRUIT PONCHE (above)
Serves 4
Ingredients:

3 tbsp honey
1 cup infused chamomile-rum (ingredients and instructions below)
1 ½ lemons
1 grapefruit
1 bottle club soda, 16 oz
Cinnamon stick and/or star anise, for garnish

* For the infused chamomile-rum

1 cup rum
2 tbsp chamomile tea
Preparation:

* For the infused chamomile-rum

In a glass, mix the rum with the chamomile tea. Let sit for 30-45 minutes.
Once the infusion is ready, strain and add liquid into mixing bowl. In a juicer, juice lemons and grapefruit, and add into bowl with infusion (if you do not have a juicer, slice the lemons and grapefruit in half and squeeze the juice out into the bowl). Add the honey and stir until combined. Serve and add ½ cup of club soda to each glass. Garnish as desired.

Read below for additional “Honey-Infused Ponches for Las Posadas” recipes by mixologist Deysi Alvarez.

HONEY-INFUSED HOT PONCHE
Serves 4
Ingredients:

3 tbsp honey
4 cinnamons sticks, broken in halves
4 cups water
1 pineapple
1 red apple
1 mango
1 peach, fresh or canned
1 apricot, fresh or canned
1 nectarine, fresh or canned
1 plantain (platano macho)
1 small bag of dried cranberries
1 small bag of prunes
½ cup cognac
½ cup rum
Lime peel, for garnish

Preparation:

In a medium-large pot add the water, honey and cinnamom sticks. Bring to a boil.

Wash all fruit and cut into small cubes (¼- ½ inch). Add cubed fruit into pot and let cook for 30-45 minutes on medium-low heat. Add the dried cranberries and prunes, and the plantain (cut in vertical slices). Once the fruit has cooked and is good to taste, turn off heat and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Add the cognac and rum before serving.

HONEY PARTY PONCHE
Serves 4
Ingredients:

5 tbsp honey
2 guavas
10 raspberries
3 green apples
1 ruby grapefruit
1 ½ oz of any blanco spirit or liquor
Lemon slices, for garnish

Preparation:

Juice grapefruit in a juicer or by slicing in half and squeezing the juice out into a bowl. Cut guavas into four parts and blend with grapefruit juice and strain into a mixing bowl. Remove the core and seeds from the apples and cut into quarters. Juice and strain into a separate bowl. Add honey and blend until mixed. Combine all ingredients in a punch bowl, adding raspberries and spirit at the end. Serve chilled.

HONEY SALVADORIAN PONCHE
Serves 4
Ingredients:

5 tbsp honey (for the honey clove chamomile tea infusion)
1 pineapple
1 red or green apple
1 mango
4 grapefruits
2 mameyes (can be found at Latin markets)
3 marañónes, frozen (can be found at Latin markets)
2 tsp pineapple tincture (can be found at health food store)
3 cups cold water
2 ¼ cups of infused tea (ingredients and instructions below)
1 ½ cups tequila blanco or reposado
Pineapple chunks, for garnish

* For the honey clove chamomile tea infusion:

5 tbsp honey
10 cloves
1 cup chamomile tea
1 ½ cups water

Preparation:

Cut pineapple in half, careful not to damage the shell. Spoon out the pineapple and keep pineapple shell for a short pineapple-tequila infusion. Place shell into a container (in case wounded) and add tequila into the shell. Let sit for 30 minutes. Chop all fruit into small cubes and add into a punch bowl along with tea infusion. Add the cold water and the pineapple-tequila infusion. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Serve over ice.

* For the honey clove chamomile tea infusion

Add the cloves into a pot and roast on low to medium heat for 4-7 minutes, stirring constantly to avoid burning. Add the water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Add chamomile tea and honey. Mix well and strain tea with a cloth (preferable) into a bowl. Let sit until cool and refrigerate. You should now have 2 ¼ cups of infused tea.

SPICED HONEY PONCHE
Serves 4
Ingredients:

5 tbsp honey
2 lemons
1 piece ginger root, small
½ cup white rum
½ cup dark rum
½ cup velvet falernum (ingredients and instructions below)
½ cup soda water
Orange peel, for garnish

* For the velvet falernum:

8 almonds
1 piece ginger root, small
2 limes
3-4 drops vanilla
1 pinch cinnamon

Preparation:

Juice lemons with a lemon squeezer or in a juicer. Peel the ginger root, chop into small pieces, add the lemon juice and place into a juicer (if you do not have a lemon squeezer or juicer, slice the lemons in half and squeeze the juice out into a bowl. Add the ginger pieces and press down firmly with a spoon). Strain and pour into a separate mixing bowl (you can reduce the spiciness by adding 1 part water and 1 tsp honey until you reach the desired spiciness). Add remaining ingredients and velvet falernum. Stir. Add ice and serve.

* For the velvet falernum:

Crush the almonds. Juice ginger with lime juice (follow same procees as above). Add drops of vanilla extract and cinnamon. Once all of the ingredients are ready, pour mix into a blender on low to high speed. Strain. Store in the refrigerator.

Normally, I'd apologize for making you stare at my fur babies. But, not today. Yes, amigas...I'm a cat lady and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I've loved cats since I was a child. Taking in my first stray "Kitty" at the age of 5. She was a beautiful Siamese and since then it's been a purrrrrfect partnership. Every cat I've ever owned-Kitty, Tinkerbell, Snowy, Meowy, and Scoundrel; have all been strays who found me.

But, in 2001, my hubby and I rescued our first cat, Kiki. She's the gray furry diva you see above. I think she thinks she owns us. Then in 2009, we rescued Stinker. He's the bratty boy. He causes all the mischief and has breathed new life into our lazy diva. And if we didn't live in such a tiny apartment, we probably would've rescued a dog by now.

As an animal lover, I'm sadly aware of how many homeless animals there are out there. There are millions of cats and dogs in shelters and rescue groups that need homes. Trusting your Intuition

The title of the post says it all. I'm not writing this for a specific reason. Nothing happened to me. I was just thinking the other day how we have this natural ability to tell if someone is not right for us or that we're in a bad situation. And how we don't know how to trust ourselves. And as a Latina and a woman in general, I feel like I was born with this intuition that has never steered me in the wrong direction. If anything, I'm the reason for being burned, because I tried to prove myself wrong. Just take a look back to a time when you trusted your "gut" and what result you got. Now go back and look at a time when you didn't. It's not rocket science, it's your intuition. Trust it.

30 Days of Thanks: #27-30

These are the last days of my 30 Days of Thanks posts and I'm kind of sad it's over. But, with this being over a new month begins which means new things to be thankful for. I just won't post about them here. LOL. Thank you for sharing the past 30 days with me.

Day 27: A song

I'm a huge Alicia Keys fan. Never mind the fact that she's an amazing singer, but the minute I heard If I Ain't Got You I was immediately in love. The hubby and I decided it would be the song we played for our first dance at our wedding. The lyrics are simple, but straight to the point. It reminds me of how strong my love is for my husband and that nothing is more important than that.

Day 28: A gift

I'm a lucky girl and I'm the first to admit that. I've been given lots of amazing gifts in my lifetime, but I recently got one of the best gifts EVER. I'm a huge NFL fan and I love my Denver Broncos! Like...really love them. My mom and stepdad decided to give us an early Christmas gift this year and it was a pair of tickets to see them play in San Diego against the Chargers. It was my first game and it was as awesome as I thought it would be. And we won! We sat on the 50 yard-line in the 14th row! I took a ton of pictures, especially of my boy Tim Tebow. Sighhhhh...it was a day I'll never forget.

Day 29: Something in your home

There are lots of things I love in my home. But, I recently was given something that I'm so thankful for and will cherish forever. My step dad's mom recently passed away and my mom gave me a portrait of The Last Supper. My mom had given it to her as a gift. It's a beautiful image and I know Joy would be happy knowing I have it.

Day 30: The thing you're most thankful for

Wow...this one is hard, but if I had to pick one thing I'm most thankful for, it would be my ability to love. I think it makes me who I am and I am so thankful that I get to share it with those who mean the world to me and who deserve it. I don't think I could live without it.

30 Days of Thanks: #22-26

Now that Thanksgiving is over and my cold is starting to go away, it's time to catch up on my 30 Days of Thanks with days 22-26. I will say I'm thankful for this blog project. It's a great way to reflect on all the amazing things, moments, and people in my life.

Day 22: A book

It's so easy to say the Bible on this one. It is definitely a source of inspiration, knowledge, and faith. It has helped me through the worst of times and carried me through my happiest times. I call it "Old Faithful."

Day 23: A feeling

I am so thankful for the feeling of being loved. This is one thing that I do not take for granted. There's nothing like getting a hug from someone who truly loves and cares for you. Or knowing that someone did something for you because they genuinely want the best for you. The feeling of being loved by another is beyond measure. I feel this every day with my husband and my amazing group of close friends and family.

Day 24: A photograph

I have a lot of photos that I am thankful for in my life. They are my mementos of moments I want to remember forever. One photograph that really sticks out for me is one taken on my wedding day. It's a group photo of my husband and I, my mom, dad, and brother. It's the most current (although it's 5 years old) photo of us all together. My mom and dad are divorced, so there probably won't be another like it for a while. It was an amazing day with those I love the most in my life.

Day 25: A luxury

Some might not consider this a luxury, but I do. I'm thankful for the luxury of having a warm and safe bed to sleep in at night. A lot of people don't have one and I couldn't imagine my life without it.

Day 26: A charity

There are so many amazing charities in this world, but I think the American Red Cross is amazing in all they do. I've been involved with their blood drives many times and even been a recipient of their charity. I think they are life changers. Always first on the scene of disasters to take action. They do amazing work!

30 Days of Thanks: #14-20

I can't believe I let almost a week pass by without working on my 30 Days of Thanks posts! Eeek! I'm blaming my stupid cold. I think it's starting to go away though. So yay! OK...here we go...

Day 14: Something new

Oh man...I am soooooo thankful for my new glasses. I haven't worn glasses since I was in junior high school. And lately my vision has been a little blurry. I got my eyes checked and found out I needed them. I can see so much better now. I sometimes think "How did I not wear glasses before?" I must have been so blind.

Day 15: A recipe

OK...I know this is a simple recipe. Nothing crazy, but it's the "best" apple pie I've ever eaten. I found it on AllRecipes.com and I seriously couldn't stop eating it. And since it's Thanksgiving week, I thought I'd share it with you. It's so yummy!! Check out Apple Pie by Grandma Ople on AllRecipes.com. Great...now I'm craving it. LOL.

Day 16: An experience

I know you're going to think this is corny, but I'm so thankful for the experience of meeting my husband. It's a really long story, but I know we were meant to be together. We met when I was home on military leave. A group of my brother's friends were supposed to hang out, but my hubby was the only one who showed. It was love at first sight.

This was a loooong time ago! LOL

Day 17: A store

This is hard, because I really love to shop. But, if I had to be thankful for a store, I would choose Kmart. Now, I love ALL stores...but as a kid, Kmart was the store that was the most affordable place for us to shop. They had lay away and red light specials. We could always get an Icee or eat in their little cafeteria. I'm probably showing my age here! LOL.It's still an affordable and great place to shop, but these are memories of a born shopper.

Day 18: A saying/quote/scripture

"Everything happens for a reason." I live by this saying. There is a reason behind every thing that happens to us. No matter what anyone else thinks, I know my experiences, bad or good, occurred so I could learn a lesson, be safe, or be of help to someone else.

Day 19: Favorite piece of clothing

My friend Ivory is going to kill me for this, but my favorite piece of clothing is actually a shoe. I don't know if that counts. But, they're my UGGS. I know...I know! But, they are so warm and comfry...and warm and comfy. Maybe they are influencing me right now because of my cold? LOL!

Day 20: A keepsake

My dog tags. When you enter military basic training, those dog tags stay around your neck 24/7. It's your identification. Any time I look at them I'm reminded of doing one the hardest things I've ever done-physically and mentally. If I could complete basic training...I pretty much can do anything.

Day 21: A disappointment or fear

To be thankful for fear sounds ironic, but I guess it can be therapeutic in a way. I used to have a fear of flying. I didn't step on a plan until I was 19-years-old and let me tell you, it wasn't very pretty. Even today, every time I step on a plane it tries to come out. But, I fight the fear and know that traveling is a passion of mine and if I want to do it...I have to get on a plane! It makes me stronger.

There are tons of mascaras out there that claim to add volume. But do they? That's when I tried out L'Oreal Paris' Voluminous False Fiber Lashes ($8.95) mascara. It's time to "Never Fake It Again."

A combination of super-fine nylon and rayon fibers perfectly adhere to natural lashes, enveloping them from root to tip thanks to an exclusive polymer in the formula. Meanwhile, an architectural precision brush with a 40-degree angle and reverse twist bristles ensure optimal application, making lashes appear fuller, longer, curled and sculpted. Following the instructions, I started applying the mascara at the base of my lashes, while wiggling the brush up. I used #275 Black Noir. The sculpting fibers in this mascara immediately adhere to your lashes and it did seem to curl them a little bit.

As you can see in my photos below, it did add some volume, but I felt like it came out a little clumpy. Not as full like their ad shows. I did only apply two coats. Maybe with a few more coats it will add some fullness. Although, my eyelashes don't look like their model's eyes, I did like how dramatic of a change it made to these thin lashes. It's very noticeable.

One random thing I noticed, and it's pretty random...but, I like the shape of the wand cover. It fits your hand naturally when you're applying it. Yeah, I said it was random.

Do you take care of your teeth? Check out this Oral Health Care Survey

Growing up, my mom always made sure we had good dental care. She was seriously adamant about it. I have the image of my dentist's office burned into my head. Even until high school she was on me about taking care this smile. Don't even get me started about my braces.

So, when I read the recent survey results by the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA), I was a little shocked to see how things have changed since I was a kid. Sponsored by Procter & Gamble brands Crest and Oral-B, the survey examined the perceptions and attitudes of U.S. Hispanics regarding their oral health care.

It also covers what barriers we face toward achieving good oral health care and what role we play as influencers when passing along oral health habits.

According to the survey, 67% rate their overall oral health as good, that's compared to 75% of the general population who state the same. I wonder what the other 33% consider themselves. They also found out that 36% of Hispanics experienced an oral health problem so severe that it impacted their daily activity. Wow, that has to be bad. While only 22% of the general population have experienced this same issue.

You might see percentages, but I see large groups of us not getting the oral health care we need. I wil admit I'm one of them. Ever since I left the military, dental insurance has come and gone. I'm starting to wonder if I truly value my teeth like I should?

Like a lot of us, 18% say they haven't visited a dentist at all in the past two years! That probably has to do with the 45% that lack dental insurance. If you're like me, then you're wondering why the numbers are so high. Maybe, like a lot of things, it has to do with a language or culture barrier. I mean, 60% of those surveyed feel that more Spanish-speaking dentists and hygienists in their communities would help them "a lot" in getting and maintaining better oral health.

So, now that we know the stats, what can we do? Well first things first, we have to educate ourselves the right way. According to the study 61% of Hispanics rely on their parents as resources for info. As a parent, if you're better educated on this, your kids will get correct oral health care tips. That means bright and shiny smiles. I know I'm going to get my butt in gear! I want to keep this smile!

My Cold and Flu Kit

Even though I love the fall and winter seasons, there's one thing I don't like...getting sick! Being "under the weather" is not fun. Unfortunately, it is going to happen and I've already been hit with a bug. I had a yucky cold a few weeks ago. And last night I started coughing again. I really hope I'm not getting sick again. But, if this does start as a cold or even worse, the flu, I'm going to be ready. I have my cold and flu kit ready!

For my cold or flu symptoms:

Thank goodness for VICK'S Nature Fusion Relief Caplets. I took these when I was sick last time and not only did they relieve my coughing, sneezing, and headache (the symptoms I had), but it didn't make me feel lightheaded or drowsy like other cold medicines do.

According to VICK'S, these caplets are coated with honey, and free of alcohol and gluten. I did try the syrup version of this and although it wasn't as bad as some of the strong cough syrups out there, I don't think I'll be trying it again. LOL! For my delicate nose (LOL):

If there's one thing I hate most about being sick, it's when you're nose gets all red and raw from constantly blowing it. Ick! I'll only use this brand, because they actually work. Then, I tried their new tissue Kleenex Cool Touch. These tissues literally feel cool, like they've been in the refrigerator or something. And it feels so good on your nose when it's been through the ringer and back.

For my night-time relief:

Who's parent didn't slather them with VICK'S VapoRub when they were sick? Till this day, my mom always recommends using it, and I do. I usually only use it at night, because that's when I feel I need it the most. I rub it on my neck and chest and wrap a scarf around my neck.

Food & Liquids:

LATISM 2011 National Conference

Last week, I had the honor to attend the Latinos in Social Media (LATISM) national conference in Chicago, Illinois. Over the past three years of blogging, I have been to a few blogging conferences and I really love all of them. But, this one tops every one I've been too.

The sessions were informative, the musical performers at each meal were so talented, and the Latino vibe was off the charts.

Not only did I get to hang out and learn with my fellow blogueras and LATISM family, but I was awarded "Best Lifestyle Blogger" at the awards gala. I just want to say congratulations to everyone that was nominated and thank you to EVERYONE who voted for me! It was an amazing night. I was in a sea of love and happiness.

I also had the chance to meet the inspiring and courageous activist Dolores Huerta. I can't even begin to describe how amazing this woman is. She might be 81-years-old, but she has the spirit and passion of a 21-year-old. I encourage you to check out the Dolores Huerta Foundation today!

I am most thankful for that time of day when I have time to reflect and pray. It's that moment right before bed. It's quiet and I feel most at peace.

Day #11: A Tradition

I am thankful for the new traditions my hubby and I are creating. Like our Football Sundays. LOL. May sound silly to some, but it's a day for us to both enjoy each other's company while watching a sport we both love.

Day #12: A Gadget

Wow...it has to be my Mac Book! I am so thankful for this amazing piece of deliciousness! I don't know what I'd do without it.

Day #13: Something Old

I have a little stuffed toy from when I was an infant. It's something I hold on to, to remind me of where I come from.

Today and every single day I eat there, I'm thankful for one of my favorite restaurants, Chyn King. Now, my mom claims to have eaten a lot of Chinese food when she was pregnant with me. Maybe that explains my love for all things fried rice!

Chyn King is a little place on 3rd street here in Los Angeles. The food is so yummy! I love their fried rice, tangerine chicken, egg drop soup, and beef and broccoli. OK...now I'm really hungry. We know the owners and they are always so nice! I think we've been eating here for about six years. It never gets old! Love it!

Demi Lovato Glows on the cover of Latina Magazine's Double Issue

The stunning Demi Lovato is making her mark on the cover of Latina Magazine. The December/January issue will hit newsstands on November 15th. The "70 Reasons to Love Being Latina Right Now" issue features the 19-year-old singer/actress as she opens up about pretty much everything.

On rehab: “I thought I was going to lose everything when I checked myself into treatment. I didn’t know if I would have a career at all when I came home. So it really hit me – I hadn’t been grateful. In that sense, I can honestly say I’m glad I hit rock bottom when I did. Most people don’t have those moments. I see a lot of young people in this industry who feel entitled because they haven’t hit rock bottom yet. I feel blessed when I get an opportunity now.”

On being Latina: “Latina culture means warm family gatherings, special stories and a bond that I love to experience. I feel so much love and comfort when I’m with [the Latino] side of my family. It makes me proud of my culture and my ethnicity.”

On her big career dreams: “In 2012, I really want to be at the Grammys. And I don’t want to go unless I’m nominated, presenting or performing. It’s my lifetime goal to be able to say I’m nominated. So I really want to make that happen.”

30 Days of Thanks

A biiiiiig thank you to my beautiful friend Patty over at A Day in My NYC for introducing me to this awesome way to be thankful for all in my life. I don't normally do posts like this, but not only will it remind me of my blessings, but it will also give you a chance to get to know me better.

Fellow blogger Designer Wife has started the "30 Days of Thanks." In her words, "This whole thing at church started the idea of being thankful for something in particular every day." I believe it started on November 1st, so I'm about seven days behind. But no worries, I'm going to pack all 7 days into one post today and just continue after that. Day 1- A person

My husband, Carlos is the most amazing man I've ever met. He's sweet, kind, understanding, and loving. I wouldn't trade him for anyone or thing in the world. Love you babe!

Day 2- An animal

My two fur babies, Kiki and Stinker. These cats mean so much to me and they are like my kids. LOL!!

Day 3- A cozy place in your home

Anywhere underneath this amazingly warm red blanket my friend purchased for me in Saudi Arabia. It's the most cozy thing in my home.

Day 4- A favorite snack

There's nothing like a slice of cheese pizza. All I need is one. Soooo thankful for my taste buds!

Day 5- A place

New York City!! I want to move there so bad. I'm very thankful for the 3 trips I've been blessed with and I can't wait for the next one.

Day 6- A pair of shoes

All of them...every single pair I own. Seriously, I can't choose just one.

Day 7 (Today)- A scent

I am thankful for being able to smell of fresh rainfall. There's just something about it. It's one of my favorite scents.

Is it just me or did the weekend fly by?

Maybe it's because In a few days I will be on my way to Chicago for the Latinos in Social Media (LATISM) National Conference. I am soooooo excited. I can't wait to see my fellow blogueras. I also can't wait to make it back to the "Windy City." I heard it's supposed to be chilly too! Brrrr...this L.A. girl is looking forward to it (I love the cold btw). But, I think I look forward to making new connections more than anything.

Living "green" is easier than you thought!

Did you know I used to have a blog dedicated to living green? I did! It was a great blog, but once again, I didn't have time for it. I should've make time for it, because it's so important to help out our planet. And there's no reason to be afraid of incorporating it into your lifestyle. It's easier than ever.

In fact, starting with your car is not only a huge step, but probably one of the easiest. You all drive a car anyways right? I mean...there are millions of cars on the road in the U.S. And that be good for our environment...let alone our wallets. Gas is so expensive today!! I'm seriously thinking about buy a hybrid car. Do any of you own one?

Think about it, it's reported that hybrid technology is proven, durable and reliable. And it delivers the best combination of fuel efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gases, without requiring special operation. Never mind the fact that it costs continue to decrease as performance improves, making them affordable for people us.

When you think of a hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius probably comes to mind. They're very popular. Bud did you know that Toyota plans to introduce 11 new and redesigned hybrid models by the end of 2012? I know!! All of you green living Toyota loving car owners will be in heaven!

A hybrid is seriously on my mind when my current lease is up. What about you?

Ford Driving Skills for Life

I will admit I got a late start driving. While some of you were already behind the wheel at 16 years-old, I didn't start until I was 21. I think my dad was trying to keep me off the road (LOL). Maybe he didn't trust me? I definitely would've been a distracted driver. This was before texting too!

We didn't have programs like Ford Driving Skills for Life. And since driver distraction contributes to 16% of fatal accidents for young drivers, it's a good thing they're reaching them now.

Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) was established in 2003 by Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts to teach newly licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driver education programs.

Last week, I was invited to Orlando, Florida to check out the free program. I got to experience a little bit of what teens go through. I watched them on two different tracks: distraction and vehicle handling. Each teen is paired with a very experienced instructor, on a closed course.

The distraction course boundaries were set up with small orange cones. It was shaped almost like a maze, not sure I would've made it without running any cones over. LOL! I was in the car with a teenage girl and she was taking those cones out! Then they had her drive while texting with one hand. Let's just say a lot of cones lost their life that day.

The vehicle handling course was interesting. They altered the tires to simulate various road conditions. There was a lot of tire screeching! They taught the teens techniques like how to accelerate, decelerate, and braking techniques.

Considering that car crashes are the #1 killer of teenagers in America, programs like Ford's Driving Skills for Life are beyond important. Social Influencers for Social Good

Imagine a place where with just one click of a button, your message to do good, is sent out to hundreds...wait no...thousands of people in a second! Duh, we're already in a place like that. In 2011, there is no easier way to use social media to help a cause.

Social good, defined as a good or service which benefits the largest number of people in the biggest way possible, is definitely on the minds of many. But, as a social influencer, are you using your social media reach for good?

Programs like Johnson & Johnson's Million Moms Challenge and text4baby are perfect examples of causes you can help!

The Million Moms Challenge: It's a call-to-action. It's a campaign for hope. A movement for change. They hope to raise awareness and funds to help women and children everywhere survive and thrive. "Like" them on Facebook.

text4baby, the first free health text messaging service in the U.S., provides accurate, text-length health information and resources in a format that is personal and timely, using a channel she knows and uses. "Like" them on Facebook.

Don't forget that those thoughts and ideas, that you share with others, is what shaped you to become the social influencer you are today. The power we have online and off should have no greater purpose than to focus on that social good. There are so many people out there that need help and guidance. Why wouldn't you use that influence to help others? To me, it only makes sense. Why not use it, if you have it?

If you asked me today what causes I'm passionate about, the first would have to be empowering Latinas. I've seen what it's like to not have the respect we deserve. Or the confidence that we can do what any man can do, any day of the week. That's one of the reasons I'm honored to be involved with programs or groups that encourage smart and courageous Latinas. I'm also starting on my road to becoming passionate about body image and self-acceptance. Loving yourself for who you are, inside and out. Not letting the media skew your view on you.

And there's no other way that this blogger can get her message out than with that click of a button. Whether it's through writing on my blog, posting on Facebook, tweeting on Twitter, or even a BBM message on my Blackberry; I can express my views on social issues in a heartbeat. There's no reason we should underestimate the power of social media and mobile technology. It's called "social" for a reason...right?

Imagine...this is just the tip of the iceberg. Use your social influence for good today and let's wait and see what happens tomorrow.

Knowledge Conquers Fear: October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month

Seriously, her passion is beyond measure. So, when I was asked to be a part of this fundraiser, I didn't have to think about it. I said YES! right away. October is an eerie month, filled with monsters, mummies, and the macabre. But while the occasional witch or skeleton might freak you out, one must concede that there are indeed more frightening things– like finding out your child will be born with spina bifida.

And yet, each day in the U.S., an average of eight families welcome a child with spina bifida into the world. Annually, an estimated 1,500 infants are born with spina bifida each year in the U.S.

I was born with spina bifida nearly two and a half decades ago. The diagnosis came as a total shock to my family, along with an entire set of secondary complications. I was also born with hydrocephalus, or “water on the brain.” During the first ten years of my life, it seemed I was in the hospital every other week with a bladder infection or shunt malfunction. I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t really scary at times.

But then, at age ten, I discovered a fantastic way to defeat my worst fears– knowledge. I vowed I would educate myself and read up on the condition that, up until that point, seemed to be taking over my life. Much like a child who imagines a ghost is in his closet, grabs a flashlight and realizes it’s only an old coat, I had come to the realization that, when you take the time to learn about something, no matter how terrifying it may seem at first, everything is less scary in the light of knowledge.

According to the Spina Bifida Association of America, “spina bifida remains the most commonly occurring birth defect in this country.” Just how common is it overall? PubMed Health, the Web site of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, reported in March of this year: “Myelomeningocele [the most severe form of spina bifida] may affect as many as 1 out of every 800 infants.”

As a 21-year member of the Spina Bifida Association of Central Florida, I’m doing my part to shed light on this condition by raising money for the Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida. When my parents and I moved from Puerto Rico to Orlando, Florida in search of better educational and healthcare opportunities for me in 1990, we found a support system away from our family and homeland in joining the SBACFL. My personal search for a public spokesperson for the spina bifida cause, as well as my work as a current member of the SBACFL board of directors, have helped me find my true purpose– galvanizing as many people as possible to support the spina bifida community.

So, in the spirit of shedding light on a little-known condition, and in honor of October, which is Spina Bifida Awareness Month, here are some statistics about spina bifida that might spook you a bit:

Spina bifida is more common than muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and cystic fibrosis combined.

Latinos have the highest incidence of spina bifida out of all the ethnic groups.

Ireland is the country with the highest incidence of spina bifida in the world.

About 50 percent of babies with spina bifida areselectively aborted after being diagnosed with spina bifida.

Doctors recommend that every woman of childbearing age consume 400 micrograms of folic acid daily to help prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida up to 70 percent of the time. In spite of this, there are currently an estimated 166,000people in the U.S. living with spina bifida– up from just 76,000 just last year.

About 90 percent of people with spina bifida are also born with hydrocephalus. Many need a shunt inserted near the brain to drain the excess cerebrospinal fluid– and many requiremultiple shunt replacements during their lives.

Other very common secondary conditions include bladder and bowel incontinence, as well as frequent urinary tract infections.

After the onset of puberty, young people with spina bifida are more prone to clinical depression than most people. Researchers think this may be due in part to social isolation.

Being able to share this information with all of you today is without a doubt the most empowering and inspiring aspect of my life. I’d love nothing more than to give you that very sense of empowerment. Lohan is said to have been infuriated by the lyrics referring to her legal troubles in the song 'Give me Everything' and is suing Pitbull claiming the song's

After months of hearing that Marc Anthony & Jennifer Lopez have a reality show in the works ¡Q’VIVA! THE CHOSEN! will premiere next year.

According to Latina Magazine Lopez, Anthony and director-choeographer Jamie King will shoot the show from October 2011 to January 2012, and it is not expected to interfere with her duties as a judge on FOX"s American Idol. During that time, they’ll scour Latin America for untapped talent—singers, dancers, musicians, and performers—while also documenting their own transcontinental travels.

It was just announced this morning that the show—which is currently being filmed in English, Spanish and Portugese—will air simultaneously in 21 countries on the most important networks throughout the Americas. Among the well-known networks that will air the global singing competition are Televisa (Mexico), Univision (U.S.-Spanish language television), and Caracol TV (Colombia). Univision will air one-hour weekly episodes of the show in Spanish.

Despite the fact that only three broadcast network partners were announced today, Q’Viva is slated to air in a total of 21 countries. The show’s English language partner is expected to be announced “very soon."

So what does Simon Fuller who is one of the show's producers have to say about the singing reality competition?

“We are bringing together all the most powerful brands and networks throughout the Americas to broadcast ¡Q’VIVA! THE CHOSEN! in a unique collaboration where each country will programme the show simultaneously. It will be a powerful statement confirming the growing importance of Latin culture.”

Mi Casa: Downy UNSTOPABLES

You may have read my tweets about how much I dislike doing laundry. Unfortunately, today is laundry day. Blah! Lately, I've been traveling a lot, so I still had clean towels in the laundry basket from a week-and-a-half ago. Of course they still had to be folded. When I grabbed them I couldn't help but notice how fresh they smelled. Almost like I washed them yesterday.

Then I remembered, that's when I used Downy UNSTOPABLES ($6.49 on eStore.com) for the first time. P&G sent me a nice goodie box a few weeks ago and it included this freshness in a bottle.

Now, don't get confused, this is not to replace your Downy softener. It's a scent booster and now it's a must have for my laundry days.

Just pour, as much as you want, of these little scent boosters into your washer before you put your clothes in. Then wash as usual. They dissolve in the wash and I haven't had any problems with them staining my clothes. I may not like doing laundry, but at least UNSTOPABLES makes it interesting.

Salma Hayek graces November Issue of Latina Magazine

The ALWAYS stunning and beautiful Salma Hayek will be on the cover of Latina Magazine's November issue, in a gorgeous Alexander McQueen dress by the way. Called a "45 year-old bombshell" by the magazine, Salma talk about her role as the love interest in the new animated film, Puss in Boots. The interview also covers how she found success in love, life, and more.

On waiting patiently to become a mother & wife: “To be your own woman, you have to question who you really are and what it is you really want – and you have to have a level of acceptance of what you can do. The things I expected of myself when I was 20 did not happen, or did not happen the way I imagined they would, and it’s okay. She looks amazing in her grey dress by Improv and shoes by Giuseppe Zanotii. And don't get me started on that amazing job Make-Up Artist Lara Vargas did using COVERGIRL products. You can find out below how she gave Kat that "modern and hot Latina woman, full of sazón!" look.

FACE:
· We started with COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Concealer in #215 in a medium-light tone, followed by Simply Ageless Foundation COVERGIRL # 255 on "Buff Beige" to prepare a perfect base that matches her skin tone.

· On her cheeks, I used the Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush# 230 "Lush Berry" which I loved because it is creamy and gives you a very natural color.

· Because I knew that Kat likes the “tan” look, I also used some of COVERGIRL Cheekers Bronzer in "Golden Tan".

Latina Magazine's 15th Anniversary Party

I have been reading Latina Magazine since the day it was published. I was in awe the first time I laid eyes on it. I couldn't believe that there was a magazine created just for me. I loved that, at that time, the magazine was in English and Spanish. And from that moment, I've always dreamt about writing for them. I still have that dream by the way.

So, when I received an invite to their 15th anniversary party, here in Los Angeles, I was so excited!! I couldn't believe it. I was literally counting down the days. And last week, that day finally came.

Held at Globe Theater inside Universal Studios, I made my way past the red carpet with my hubby in hand. I immediately ran into my very loving and respected bloguera buddies. I was beyond happy to be there.

Yes, there were celebrities, but I was more excited to (introduce myself) meet Christy Haubegger, the founder of Latina Magazine and Editorial Director Galina Espinoza. They are my celebrities-strong and smart Latina women.

I did have to introduce myself to J.R. Martinez of All My Children and Dancing with the Stars. This Army veteran is such an inspiration to me. I heard him speak last year at a JAFRA conference and his story is very motivating. I even snapped a pic with him (below).

COVERGIRL was on hand to give everyone mini-makeovers and make up touch-ups. Loved it! The night ended with an amazing performance from Kat Deluna. She's a cutie and very talented.

Best Friends, South Beach, and Thunderstorms.

I honestly didn't plan on posting this weekend, but I wanted to give you an update on my bff weekend.

For the past few months, my friends and I have been planning our trip to Miami. To be able to relax and have fun in South Beach has been on our minds since we planned this trip. If you're a Weather.com junkie like me, you'll know the weather hasn't been so great. Ok, it sucks.

But, I'm not going to let that stop me from having an amazing time with two of my best friends. We were lucky to get a few hours of sun yesterday by the pool. And now that I think about it, time spent together means more than warm weather. I can sit here and curse the treacherous thunderstorms, but is that going to make it go away? No.

I will have a few drinks, laugh at the rain, and enjoy the view. I'm definitely an optimist about 90% of the time and I'm not going to let that 10% win.

What I wish I was eating...

I've been eyeing this Flank Steak with Chimichurri Sauce recipe from QueRicaVida.com for about a week now. I can't wait to make it. I have a thing for chimichurri sauce. My brother-in-law makes his own yummy version, but we haven't had it in a long time. I think I'm due.

Are you a chimichurri fan? Do you have a special way you prepare it?

Here's the Que Rica Vida recipe:

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups Italian dressing
1 beef flank steak (1 1/2 lb)
1/3 cup olive or canola oil
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules
1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper
3 black peppercorns

Directions

Pour dressing into shallow glass or plastic dish or resealable food-storage plastic bag. Add beef, turning to coat. Cover dish or seal bag; refrigerate, turning beef occasionally, at least 4 hours but no longer than 24 hours to marinate.
In small nonmetal bowl, mix sauce ingredients until blended. Cover; refrigerate at least 4 hours, or until serving time.
Heat oven to 350°F. Heat 12-inch ovenproof grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat until hot. Remove beef from dressing; discard dressing. Add beef to grill pan; cook 4 to 6 minutes, turning once, until browned. Place grill pan in oven. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until beef is of desired doneness.
To serve, cut steak across grain into thin slices. Serve with sauce.

How important is "community?"

Every day I get on my computer and the first thing I do is long onto my social media networks. I want to see what you're all up to and what's going on in the blogger world. It's a daily routine.

And even though I've only met a handful of you face to face, I still feel like we've known each other for years. It's our little (but definitely growing) community.

We are what the dictionary defines as a community. A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage. Yes, we are one race, but within this race there are so many different cultures. And we have one thing in common, we're Latinos online.

As I look through my rose-colored glasses, I can't help but want us all to depend on each other and work together to help this community grow. That's why I'm so happy and honored to be a part of groups like Latina Smart and Latinos in Social Media (LATISM). They're both great communities.

LATISM's mission is clear- "dedicated to advancing the social, civic and economic status of the Latino community." How can we advance if we don't support each other?

That's why sayings like..."United we stand. Divided we fall," mean so much to me. We're definitely stronger in numbers. Especially if we can expand the community.

I've heard different arguments when it comes to this topic. I want to know what you think.

Monte Carlo Sparkles with Selena Gomez

It's official, I need to make my way back to the south of France. I lived there for a few months, back in my military days. And watching the movie Monte Carlo, definitely has me dreaming of going back soon. I miss it!

Being a fan of Selena Gomez, I was looking forward to seeing this. I really liked it and it wasn't what I expected.

In the teen comedy, Grace (Gomez), a small town girl, saves up for a graduation trip to Paris with her best friend Emma (Kate Cassidy) and not so close step-sister Meg (Leighton Meester).

During the trip, things don't go as expected when they're left at the Eiffel Tower by their tour guide. Just when they think their trip is ruined, Grace is mistaken for a socialite, she's whisked away to Monte Carlo, and it's all glitz and glamour from that moment on. Emma and Meg even get in on the fantasy.

I have a feeling your preteens will love it. Maybe you'll even like it too.

Congrats to actress Sofia Vergara for debuting her new Kmart fashion line yesterday! "They are clothes with colors and shapes that are on the (fashion show) runways, but aimed at women of all sizes," the Colombian star of ABC's hit comedy "Modern Family" told Efe in New York. The 39-year-old beauty said her new clothing line is intended for "women who want to look pretty, sexy and comfortable, but don't have a big budget."
As of her work on the Emmy-winning show Modern Family: "Never in my life did I imagine I could be part of a series like this and work with those actors."

According to Fox Latino Actress Penélope Cruz, who has been shooting her new film "Venuto al Mondo" in Sarajevo since last week, had sharp words for a paparazzo that took a picture of her with her infant son, whom she is trying to shield from the media. "I know you. You published photos of me with my boy, though the agreement was you wouldn't do that. You should be ashamed of yourself!" Cruz told the reporter.
